Hollow Oak Readers is a small, unhurried book circle that meets once a month to talk about one book properly. We keep notes so that nobody who misses an evening feels locked out of the conversation.

We began in the autumn of 2021, when four neighbours discovered that they had each been reading the same long novel alone and rather slowly. The first meeting happened around a kitchen table with a pot of tea and a tin of shortbread, and it ran an hour longer than anyone intended. We have met on the second Thursday of the month ever since, in a borrowed back room with radiators that clank, chairs that do not match, and a window that looks out over a railway cutting.

The circle is deliberately small and deliberately unfussy. There is no membership fee, no committee, no reading quota and no shame in arriving halfway through a book. One person volunteers to open the discussion, someone else brings something edible, and the rest of us bring our copies with their turned-down corners and their arguments in the margins. We finish by nine because several of us have early starts and one of us has a dog with firm opinions about bedtime.

These pages are the tidy version of the notebook that sits in the organiser's bag. They collect what was said, what we decided to read next, and the small customs that have grown up around the circle over the years. They are written partly for members who missed an evening and partly for anyone elsewhere who is thinking of starting something similar and would like to see how one small group actually goes about it.
